In 1974, Gordon Withnall's golf ball landed in a puddle at Liverpool Golf Course in Sydney. A mate jokingly told him, since he was an inventor, to go build a machine to clear the puddles. Three days later, working with perforated metal in his workshop, he had the first prototype — roughly the size of today's Sandpiper.
