The right cricket training setup depends on who's using it, how often, and what space you have available. These are the key decisions to work through before you buy:
Permanent vs portable. Permanent installations like the Concertina Batting Cage mount to an existing fence or wall and fold away when not in use β giving you a full 12m training bay that disappears to just 0.8m deep between sessions. Portable options suit facilities where a permanent installation isn't possible or where the cage needs to move between multiple sites. For most clubs and home properties, a permanent fold-away cage is the better long-term investment.
Home vs club vs school. Home installations typically mount to a tennis court fence β the perimeter fence provides a solid anchor point and the court gives you the space to extend fully. Club installations mount to the boundary fence at the oval and fold back between training sessions and match days. School installations suit existing building walls, gymnasium walls, or boundary fencing. All three setups use the same equipment β the difference is in the anchor point and the space available.
Indoor vs outdoor. Most cricket training equipment is designed for outdoor use, but permanent fold-away cages can be installed indoors in facilities with sufficient ceiling height (minimum 3m) and a solid wall or structure to anchor to. School gymnasiums, indoor sports centres, and large recreation facilities are all suitable. Indoor installations are particularly valuable for year-round training in regions where outdoor practice is weather-limited.
Single sport vs multi-sport. If your facility also runs golf, a batting cage with an optional golf netting and baffle add-on turns one installation into a dual-sport training facility β cricket and golf from the same fence mounting point. For schools and clubs applying for grants, a multi-sport installation is a stronger application than a single-sport one.
Permanent cricket training infrastructure is regularly funded through Sport Australia's Sporting Schools programme, state sport and recreation grants, and local council community sport funding. Schools and clubs that apply for grants to fund batting cages, cricket nets, and training equipment are frequently successful β particularly where the application demonstrates multi-sport use, year-round accessibility, and measurable participation outcomes.
Club Captain helps you identify the right grant, scope the application, and submit with confidence. We provide itemised quotes formatted for grant applications, school purchase orders, and committee approval β with installation costs included where applicable.

What cricket training equipment do I need for a home setup?
For most home setups, a fold-away batting cage mounted to an existing tennis court fence or boundary fence is the best foundation. It gives you a full-size 12m training bay for batting and bowling practice that disappears against the fence when you're done. Add a bowling machine for solo batting sessions and you have a professional-standard home training facility. If you don't have a fence to mount to, contact us and we'll discuss post options for your property.
What size cricket net do I need?
A full-size senior cricket net is 12m long Γ 3.6m wide Γ 3m high β the correct dimensions for proper batting and bowling practice at senior level. Junior programs can operate in shorter bays, but a full-size net is the better long-term investment if your facility runs mixed age groups. The Concertina Batting Cage is built to full senior dimensions as standard.
Can a batting cage be used indoors?
Yes β where an indoor facility has a minimum ceiling height of 3m and a solid wall or structure to anchor to, a permanent fold-away batting cage can be installed indoors. School gymnasiums, indoor sports centres, recreation stadiums, and large warehouse-style facilities are all suitable. Indoor cricket training nets allow year-round practice regardless of weather, which is particularly valuable for clubs and schools in tropical and high-rainfall regions.
How does a fold-away batting cage work?
A fold-away or concertina batting cage is permanently mounted to an existing fence or wall. When extended it provides a full-size training bay β 12m long, 3.6m wide, 3m high. When not in use it folds accordion-style back against the fence, collapsing to just 0.8m deep. The cage extends and collapses in under five minutes without tools, making it practical for daily use without permanently occupying the space.
Can cricket training equipment be grant funded?
Yes β permanent cricket training infrastructure including batting cages and cricket nets is regularly funded through Sport Australia's Sporting Schools programme, state sport and recreation grants, and local council community sport funding. Multi-sport installations that serve both cricket and golf are particularly strong grant applications. Club Captain helps clubs and schools identify the right grant and build a compelling application. Start with The Grant Playbook β
