Do I need council approval to install a flag pole?
In most Australian councils, flag poles under 8m on residential or private property do not require a development approval. Poles above 8m, or poles installed on commercial or public land, may require a planning permit or development approval depending on your local council's requirements. Always check with your local council before purchasing a pole 8.5m or above. Club Captain can provide a formal quote to accompany a DA application if required.
Can I install this myself?
The two-piece design makes installation significantly more manageable than a single-piece pole. A confident DIYer or handyperson can complete the installation — the process involves digging a hole, setting the HD galvanised steel ground sleeve in concrete, allowing it to cure, and then assembling and dropping the two pole sections into the sleeve. The construction cage add-on assists with keeping the sleeve correctly positioned during the concrete pour. If you're unsure, a local concreter or handyperson can complete the installation in a few hours.
What is the construction cage for?
The construction cage is a steel cage that surrounds the HD galvanised steel ground sleeve during the concrete pour — keeping it correctly positioned and plumb while the concrete sets. Without it, the sleeve can shift slightly during pouring. Most professional installers use a cage. DIY installers should also select the cage option to ensure the sleeve is correctly positioned. It's a one-time installation aid — not a permanent component.
How deep does the concrete footing need to be?
Footing depth depends on the pole height and local soil conditions. As a general guide, the footing depth should be approximately 10% of the pole height — so a 6m pole requires approximately 600mm depth, a 9m pole approximately 900mm. Your local installer or engineer can confirm the correct footing specification for your site and soil type. Contact us for a formal engineering specification if required for a council DA.
What size flag do I need for my pole?
As a general rule, the flag length should be approximately 25–30% of the pole height. For a 6m pole, a flag of approximately 1.5–1.8m length is appropriate. For a 9m pole, approximately 2.25–2.7m. Using a flag that's too small looks lost on a tall pole — using one that's too large puts excess wind load on the pole and halyard. Contact us for flag recommendations to suit your pole height.
